Deanna was always done a dirty by the writers. As an empath she could short cut the tension and drama of most story lines so it was an endless case of “I am unable to read them” to allow some narrative tension.

You’re right. They fucked over Deanna constantly. Always dropping the ball and making her a background character. Basically Sigourneys character in Galaxy Quest. And in Nemesis they did it again, to a disgusting extreme, by having the Reman dude rape Deanna just so she could “sense his presence” while cloaked and had a target to fire on. The writers fucked her over every chance they could. Except for First Contact bar scene. That was great.

Picard Season 3 gave some nice time with her at least.

I hadn’t considered that but you’re right, there are some powers that just don’t work if the good guys have them.

I know you jest, but having an empath who call tell you if theyre lying creates so many issues for so many potential plots.

It can work, but it turns into how Deanna was sidelined.

Back in the 90s there were at least 5 X-men teams and every single one of them had a full telepath on them, but there was still enough drama and plot for multiple monthly installments of the most intricate superhero soap opera ever created.

Star Trek writers are cowards for avoiding Betazoids.

Weren’t they kids shows? Honestly, I never watched them, so I can’t attest to how successfully they were able to integrate telepaths, but I can’t imagine they did well. Comics aren’t really known for good stories.

I meant the comics, and really, as Star Trek fans we should not be looking down on superheroes. Kirk did once team up with Abraham Lincoln, after all.

      The three Deanna storylines:

      1. I sense the thing you’re all seeing.
      2. My powers are useless because reasons
      3. Time to get mind-raped or just raped

I always love one-on-one scenes between characters who others don’t get much time together

For example, Data asking Worf for advice on picking out a present for a human wedding is gold!

Oh thanks for reminding me that I have cake in the fridge. Fuck it. Cake for breakfast. I’m an adult. I’m allowed.

Janeway actually didn’t let me live. She split me into bitch and asshole. Got sick of them and put them back together into me. Turns out they cancel each other out. Who knew?

Fun fact: cats don’t just purr when they’re happy! They use it as a method of self-calming and healing when feeling anxious or unwell. Amazingly they purr at a frequency that stimulates healing, which is one possible reason as to why the behavior evolved in the first place. Each individual is different of course, but generally you can get a better sense of a cat’s emotional state by observing their eyes (that’s how cats smile!) than by whether they are purring or not.
