Another player who was at the table during the incident sent me this meme after the problem player in question (they had a history) left the group chat.

Felt like sharing it here because I’m sure more people should keep this kind of thing in mind.

It initially costs 200 gp, and can be upgraded with up to 3 “upgrades” each one costing as little as 15 gp or as much as 550.

    Your speed becomes 30.

You can control the chair telepathically.

The chair benefits from any spells cast on you.

The chair retains its beneifts when you Wild Shape or Polymorph (including the upgrades).

The chair has no hit points and must be hit by 3 critical hit melee attacks “in the same encounter” (whatever that means) before needing repairs, but the chair being “broken” does nothing to stop it from functioning.

The chair also beneifts from attuned magic items.

The chair also counts as a mount for the purposes of mounted combat.

The chair gives you advantage against being knocked prone.

You get extra movement speed “going downhill.”

You can use it to attack dealing 1d8 damage, using STR or DEX,

Below is a summarized list of the upgrades.

Advantage on DEX saves and Acrobatics/Stealth checks.

“All-terrain” upgrade I think that lets you ignore difficult terrain?

Advantage on saving throws against certain damage types.

Gives you a +2 AC bonus, critical hits necessary increase to 6, but will give you disadvantage on DEX saves and Acrobatics/Stealth.

Built-in barricades that can grant you 1/2 or 3/4 cover.

Cast a few spells once per day, including Feather Fall, Freedom of Movement, Dimension Door, Grease, Spider Climb, Thunderwave, and Water Breathing.

Turn the chair into a raft.

Can knock up to 4 creatures prone.

    Extra 1d4 damage per hit.

    Drop enhanced caltrops.

Extra 1d6 damage per attack and imposes disadvantage on target’s next attack.

Spider Legs, increases speed to 40, and does the obvious.

    Advantage on Stealth checks.

Let’s replace “wheelchair” with “breastplate” lol

I found that so frustrating because among the people being ableist about it, it was just so ridiculously poorly balanced. But people then wanted to defend it and paint anyone who criticized it as ableist. The doc even has a section saying that the combat wheelchair doesn’t give any advantage over able-bodied players, that it just allows people to continue adventuring, and that it is cruel to deny disabled folks the opportunity to adventure.

Then they turn around and write upgrades like 1/day dimension door. That’s equivalent to a rare magic item, which XGE says sells for 2000-20000gp, being sold exclusively to wheelchair users for 500gp. If that’s not an advantage I don’t know what is.

I have nothing wrong with the premise of a combat wheelchair, I think it could be cool, it’s just poorly made with all the “upgrades”.

It isn’t poorly made, it is just poorly balanced.

Just change the price to whatever your liking.

One of my characters got this recently after losing a leg in a duel. Everybody was making so many inappropriate wheelchair jokes that the DM allowed me to graft on a half-dragon’s leg, somehow. It’s a real shame because before the overpowered wheelchair I was interested in role-playing the disability seriously.
