That’s how I “onboarded” to docker. Portainer acted like a stepping stone, as I got familiar with how docker worked.

If you are recently degoogled, then protonmail is a good option ( not self hosted) you get proton vpn, password manager, calendar , and 500GB drive storage.

I found they were easier to config. somebody has a yaml file or via portainer to setup ports etc. and you can always bash into a docker to lurk inside the black box

Docker is great. I learned it from aetting up an Openmediavault server that had a built in docker extension, so now lots of servers running off that one server. Also portainer can be very handy for working with containers , basically a gui for the command line stuff or compose files you’d normally use in docker cli

I think what people are suggesting is doing all those steps will be more time and testing than just installing the os and adding apps.

Well, kinda. openSUSE is directly supported by nVidia, they have a repo that nVidia hosts for SUSE openSUSE, leap amd tumbleweed. zero issues on my OpenSUSE machines, so their issue might be some other config / codec issue. packman repo is suggeated over OPI repos

The thing with suse is nVidia maintains a repo for SUSE and OpenSUSE, so nVidia works well on it for obvious reasons.

Many people do dual drives, but if you install linux second and it is a distro thay uses grub with probe foreign OS them you don’t really need two drives. make space on windows drive, in the linux installer create another boot partition, root and home. You set bios to boot Linux grub. Grub will launch and give you linux or choice to chainload to Windows. Windows is unaware it is getting kicked off by grub so the Windows and Lunux boot partitions leave each other alone. i can’t vouch for every distro letting you setup like this but this is how my OoenSUSE has been since 2017

Its not even a good comparison. I had GUI Linux running on a Wii console. I think Wii has 100MB of RAM.

I wish I could share this letter with their developers and management.

That would be my only complaint about OpenSUSE, the default size for partitions is too conservative. it would default to 30gig and even though there is a snapper cleanup, acheduler updates would fill it up. I now add to the recommended x2, and then the partition always hovers around 70%. The scheduled btrfs and snapper cleanup it keep it managed

Canada here, ISP provides router. You can set in Bridge Mode to avoid using their router, but then you are supplying your own equipment, whioe running through their box.

Windows wont if you set two independent boot partitions, and you chainload from kinux grub to windows. windows never realizes there is another boot partition. Grub is your BIOS EFI default and Grub has an entry to kickoff windows boot. You can even boot to linux right after what ahould be a windows update restart, do your linux work and when you kickoff windows again the reatart and update continues. i have had this setup since 2017.

As Chais mentioned use that, but also Gnome has volume per app in sound settings I believe…once the app is playing sound.

Partitioning is great with a boot partition for each OS,and linux chainloading to windows. Then I have aseparate NTFS drive as secondary drive in Windows and Linux, in case I need to work on data in either OS

Just install linux 2nd and have it probe foreign OS, and create a linux only boot partition. Grub will then make a chainloader entry to windows boot partition. Linux won’t care if you select windows chainload option, and Windows won’t know it ia being chainloaded. No OS overlap. just set Grub Boot entry as primary boot in BIOS, EFI.

OpenSUSE for most of my systems. It has been going for 7 years with no upgrade issues, and nVidia hosts an OpenSUSE version of their proprietary drivers, so you get good GPU support. YAST2 GUI, btrfs snapshot, and rollbacks mean if you break something you are up and running by picking another boot snapshot. On an older laptop from 2010 i gound NixOS was the best choice out of all the distros
