Techwise, in addition to directly following big tech sites like Ars, Techchunch, and others I also am subscribed to the Techmeme feed because that’ll surface things from all major outlets. For news I mainly follow more local stuff, but I do sub to feeds from ProPublica and 404 Media, since they break a lot of stories.
Proof that you can’t buy maturity.
The check will be worth less than the 13th month of “credit monitoring” people end up paying for when the free year that Comcast offers up runs out.
Yeah, I think this is a big part of it. The Star Trek sub’s total abandonment of Reddit and conversion to a standalone Lemmy instance during the Blackout was a big deal and a big driver of traffic in those days and beyond.
Star Trek is big in the Threadiverse for the same reason that Earth is big in the Federation. They were a massive force in the early days.
“… uh… I’m going to say that’s a performance(?) roll.” is my goto
Studies have shown that people change at a certain amount of money, like they cross a line in the sand. When you can buy anything everything just becomes yours by default in your mind. And anyone who can’t do that are basically sheep dogs - useful but not worth your time. These studies were done in the twenty-tens and the number then was between 20 and 30 million for most people. Imagine your view on the world if you have 100 times that amount.
That airport is too busy. I feel bad for the controllers.
This reminds me of the joke at the end of the Sim City 2000 credit scroll. So every time I hear the frayed knot punchline I think about Arcologies.
I’ll do that. Thanks. I hadn’t heard of it.
Yeah, Ive though of that. Seems like it opens to door to dozens more, potentially permanent, dystopias.
Is there going to be a harddrive housing crisis? Will my brain upload become obsolete and thereby be, effectively, disabled and undesirable for work? What then? What if the people who control my brain decide I should work 24/7/365, do I have recourse? Would anyone even know I was being treated that way? Would they use my whole consciousness to do work or would they chop me up into pieces so my language center is doing live captioning while the creative parts of my brain answer DALL-E prompts? Would they make it so the part of my brain that might complain about working conditions doesn’t know that the rest is being abused, Severance style?
Yeah. Computer fashion has been a thing since even before the blueberry imac and hello kitty purse macbook made computers status symbols. A current fashion trend is “RGBLEDs make gaming machines go brrrr!”
This is the sort of thing I think of when people talk about “uploading their consciousness.” Whose going to keep paying for that server uptime? Is Facebook going to acquire my brain and put it into cold storage while telling the world I’m not experiencing an eternity in solitary confinement?
Good idea. Maybe we can also do active hashtags to follow.

One of our cats care’s 0% for most foods but will beg for provolone cheese. Only provolone.
And tuna but that’s not weird.
Actually, I missed that. And I’d rather go back to unknowing it. Shoe shopping is a chore, not a prize.
after submitting a $122,135 order
The buyer told us that he paid a $250 order fee on Friday and previously paid a $100 reservation fee.
Tesla doesn’t have to refund those types of fees if a buyer cancels
You have to pay $350 to get the privilege to fork over a hundred and twenty grand? My jaw literally dropped.
I’ve got a couple frosted windows that I’d love to be as insulating as wood, I can see it maybe being used for that.
When Bolt went under they just walked away from their bikes. Thankfully the manufacturer stepped in.
