But, the fact that the management or at least the CEO (that also has a major saying in everyday business and is highly respected/feared) openly shows a disrespect for safety measures and laughs them off as annoying, definitely paints a picture. No, we should definitely not simply accept this kind of unjust and overly excessive legislation. Reality has shown that even democratic governments will use these technological means for questionable purposes. Also, what if there is a security breach and god knows who gets access to everyone’s private messages? The old story of “i have nothing to hide” is no excuse, everyone has a right to private communication without fear of “saying something wrong”. Things that are okay to say now may not be in the future. We see a trend towards right and extremist parties in many European countries, what if they get access to everyone’s communication and have the means to go after whoever they like? Once the door is open, there is no going back. And even if there is no bad intention and they really just look for child pornography: There are always false positives and algorithms are faulty. With this legislation, everyone is suddenly at risk of being visited by the police because some system decided that you are a threat

They know that it is very hard for them to please the activists and pass sufficient climate legislation in the short term, so it is apparent that protests will continue and even increase. I think the whole idea of an independent compliance process and product label was to be able to define their own requirements and not having to take what the EU says. They would basically build on CE requirements and change things up a bit to make it more suitable to the UK market. But for manufacturers, this makes things super complicated

Well, not to be picky here, but two things: first, the CE marking is not a safety mark but a compliance mark, indicating the conformity of the product to the applicable European legislation. This is mostly related to product safety but can also include environmental aspects or others, e.g. use of correct radio frequencies according to the radio equipment directive. Second, it is not necessary to always have your product certified by a European notified body, as this article seems to imply. The CE marking is a manufacturer’s declaration

Thank you for your work! I also think the r/europe subreddit worked quite well mostly, at least from my experience, but how much that was due to moderation, i don’t know. Maybe we could start with just some basic rules and allow some more vivid discussions and a variety of posts while the amount of posts and comments is still relatively low, and add more strict rules as time shows are necessary? Basic rules could be: no racism, no sexism and other discrimination, no violence, hate speech and offensive language, topics must be europe related, no advertising, things like that
