Nope. I run my own instance and I have 1,500 followers, and I follow Lemmy communities there too.
If you’re into desktop functionality, better VNC implementations are badly needed. It’s not intuitive on most desktop distros how to configure a remote desktop solution correctly. We’re nowhere near the “it just works” quality that RDP has on Windows.
If you’re into hardware, I suspect there’s work that needs to be done with BD-R DL/XL support. I don’t think I’ve ever successfully burned a multi-layer Blu Ray disc across multiple distros, burners, and drives.
You can always run your own single-user instance. Of course, you quickly discover why people defederate from certain instances.
But if you really want it you can just rawdog ActivityPub.
Wouldn’t that make it easier for the AI?
I wish search engines “just delivered search results”. Unfortunately, they now directly and confidently answer questions with complete nonsense.
It will also be interesting to see if Altman ends up demonstrating the dishonest behavior at Microsoft that he’s been accused of at OpenAI, with the former inheriting the mess that those who expelled him from the latter were hoping to avoid. His reputation and other endeavors, especially WorldCoin, don’t really give me much confidence in him, personally.
Yeah, the apps on iPhones never steal or mishandle your data. /s
If only there was some system in place where police could verify their authority somehow.
The writer here seems confused. Free speech thrives online. There is no freer a place to speak than the Internet.
What they seem to take issue with is that free speech isn’t always the path to truth. This was never a condition of free speech, and the lack of truth online doesn’t make the speech there any less free.
In fact, free speech is the very force that allows people to lie with impunity. Maybe there would be more truth if speech were less free.

I don’t understand the comparison. Are the children being preyed upon the alcoholics in this scenario?
They made a video game about this.
Because the headline is about what the model said, and the model said that it was AI. Neither the headline nor the article says that she’s right about it, just that her face was altered dramatically, which is absolutely relevant when you consider some of the most widespread uses for visual AI right now. This might have just been photoshop, but it looks a lot like some of the AI-powered TikTok filters, so it’s worth a conversation as to why we feel the need to do this to people’s faces at all.
I think the nuance is understanding the evils of the Israeli state without blaming Jews or endorsing violence against Israeli civilians. You aren’t doing that here, but lots of people are doing this right now (the people “forming an opinion on their own” aren’t always forming great opinions). Anyone suggesting that nuance is unnecessary is begging you to only see their side of things. There are zero issues in the world that don’t require some degree of nuance; why you would think such a complex and long-standing conflict like this one is better without critical thinking is the real insult here.
I think there are two issues:

I wouldn’t normally be the guy to jump straight to the conclusion that you are a Russian propagandist, but look at that instance name. Not even subtle.
“Fascism is when employers tell their employees what to do.”
To be fair, ActivityPub is an open standard, so corporate adoption was a guarantee following any amount of success.
As an advocate for ActivityPub, I want to see more entities using it. The fact that Threads and Flipboard will interoperate will likely convince more corporate actors to join the fediverse, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
There will always be instances that block out the entire corporate fediverse, and those communities will still thrive alongside instances that do federate with the corporations. People will have freedom of choice without having to exist in a bubble, and I think that’s great.
The strength is in defederation, where communities can decide who they want to play with. I’m not personally worried about big companies like Meta embracing ActivityPub because their bad behavior will have consequences for them, and the community is starting off vigilant and aware. If they play nice, the community might loosen its grip, but if they act exploitive or abusive, they’ll get shut out from most of the community forever.
