  • Personally, I like having a full fledged PC connected to my TV. Currently I’m using a Beelink T4 running Ubuntu. The PC is under my direct administrative control, so no surprises with ads or other things.

Power consumption may be slightly higher than an NVIDIA Shield or Roku, but at 24w at full tilt for the Beelink it cannot be that much more.

The same Beelink machine comes with Windows 10 as well, if you’d rather have Windows.

  • My wife and I are both devoted readers and read dozens of books every year. However, about 7 years ago I took a job that made me commute 50 miles a day.

I also love to listen to music, but the 30 minute to 1 plus hour drive each way was boring as hell. So I decided to look into audio books and the first one I listened to was “Leviathan Wakes” book 1 of “The Expanse.” I went from hating my commute every day, to actually slowing down and taking more time to consume more books.

I love audio books now and have listened to hundreds over the last several years. I still read books of course and my wife has not listened to audio books with any consistency, unless we are traveling. Audio books are excellent at keeping the kids entertained on those long trips to see family.

My wife and I often read the same books and series and we discuss them at length. I have not found any difference in my ability to understand and debate the material, whether I’ve read or listened to it. I do find it a bit easier to remember smaller details if I’ve read it, other than that there is little difference. At least for me.

  • Former Skydiver here.

At least for the Skydiving community… Skydivers are not better, nor are they worse than the general public.

What skydivers are… is different. Your average jumper will not experience fear on an average jump. I’ve actually fallen asleep on the way to altitude. There are things that can scare us though, usually when we’re in the plane. I’ve experienced two bailouts (both from the same plane), one crash (fuel starvation on climb out), and multiple rejected take offs. All of those events gave everyone aboard those planes a good dose of fear, including me.

We all still jumped the very next time we could, even after the crash.

As I said… Skydivers are just a bit different, but we still experience fear.

Why did I quit skydiving? I got bored. Yes, literally. Made a skydive, it went perfectly with people I was good friends with, got to the ground and started daisy chaining my main and realized… I just didn’t feel anything any longer. Felt it was better to leave the sport than to try increasingly crazier things to find that feeling again. I know people that did that and it usually doesn’t end well.

  • I just deleted my 11 year old account completely, having using Power Suite Delete yesterday to delete the data on it.

My parting comment in the deletion dialog was thus where it asked “Help Reddit Improve”:

"Reddit Management does not suffer from Imposter Syndrome.

Imposter Syndrome is when a fully capable individual feels as though they are not able to perform a job or task.

Reddit Management does not suffer from Imposter Syndrome, because that is EXACTLY how you should feel about yourselves.

    Incompetent and incapable."

  • My first post on Lemmy!

Anything to do with garage doors, except for painting and oiling. Garage door springs are not something to mess around with. When the door is closed, the springs have an enormous amount of energy stored and can send metal shards easily through walls and people.

I will do electrical, plumbing, drywall (I hate mudding), framing, you name it. I will NOT mess with garage door springs.
