Everything is way overpriced
Why would somebody need to pay $10 for an email?
Why would one hire a developer when you’re a developer yourself?
Why would one use amazon buckets when they are overpriced?
Domain names from ~$15, since when?
And the offshore servers, you can find those for even cheaper and more powerful than $5 (or many cores and 16gb ram for $5)
Also, why would you pay for jenkins when you can host it or something similar?
Look, he got money, we got forks, the creator of the app might create a new project and run it on money they got from this sale
The company that purchased the app will soon find out that their whole userbase was foss people and they left for forks
You don’t need to build/install with root, you can do home-manager
And for isolation there’s one good module, I forgot its name
And if just easier but less reproducible, you can do the containers, but with nixos’ podman, and this is of course builtin
I’m already on nixos, so nextcloud is not a pain anymore
I’m fully agree on all the points you mentioned
I run nextcloud on a es i9 with so much ram I don’t remember how much exactly, 32 or 64
P.s. I believe the future of selfhosted cloud is based on syncthing, has some e2e encryption, and vpn integrated
See this comment https://sh.itjust.works/comment/6651651
You can use the sandboxing of nixos
You get better performance, nixos level reproducibility, and it’s not docker which is not foss and running with root
Nixos, nixos, nixos 🤌
Nixos + automatic upgrades = if my system breaks, then everyone’s system breaks
I actually like it, i’m using deck, cospend, share folders, manage some projects, send other people shares
For me it feels perfect, I don’t need to manage different services and know them in depth
Other people just need to create one account and we can do all the stuff by using our names, you know
For me nextcloud “just works”
For me google isn’t “just works”. Very few functions in the ui, pretty slow
I use nixos, so configuration for me is not that painful. And every version it becomes faster and faster, and right now it’s pretty fast
There’s the ipfs link of the image in the description of the nft, and just in the contract (Probably to open it you would need an ipfs support in your browser or a plugin)
Also, just for browsing, i’m sure there are apps that let you explore ipfs nicely
There are some different way you can achieve many of these. There are like the cloud collaboration suits, and syncthing way
I want to sync my calendars and contacts
For this you can have something like nextcloud or it’s alternatives, or syncthing with decsync, or a separate caldav service
I want to download media like TV shows and movies. (And music, too). “Of course, only legal obtained from the internet cough.”
I personally use jellyfin + transmission. I’m still trying to set up *arr suite, but it’s not working, then I could use something like jellyseer. But transmission is working well anyway
Yeah, but most of the password managers are a security risk too
I would actually be happy to see a good airgapped password manager working with qr codes, or NFC, or something like that
Maybe as an app for an old phone, or a raspberry pi zero
Ok, I didn’t know, it’s just usually I see some notifications like “priv app is the same as root, be careful”. Thank you
About the apps, I recommend switching, it’s not as scary as I sounds, most of the apps have an alternative or sth like that
Some people say it’s your IP, but actually IP is rarely used for tracking
On the way to privacy there are some things you should know:
They are priv apps, I believe it’s the same as root
Most of the privacy apps don’t require you to have gapps and their notifications
Spell the words with mistakes + add numbers and symbols with a rule, capitalize with a rule too
But lyrics of a song is an really obvious target to get to a dictionary(if it’s a dictionary attack)
More interesting would be encrypting name of the service, maybe with you login or something
So “gooey” + “lemmy”, let’s say we take three first letters and three last
“goommy”
Create a dictionary in your head only you know:
go out out mom mom yes (for an example I used short words)
Make mistakes that you would:
go oud oud mam mam yess
Add some numbers and symbols, capitalize
gO Oud Oud mAm mAm yEss (o, a, e are capitalized)
You get the point
It’s still metadata, ditch google play services all at once
If you’re ready to put on tinfoil, signal is not the way to go too
Phone number requirement is a big no-no in privacy community, plus signal wants to centralize more and more, when they could actually make it possible to selfhost signal
There’s gos’ camera already preinstalled, no need to download anything 🫣
They discourage fdroid because it’s not very secure, until it ever gets better
There’s the secure Accrescent, but it has almost no apps in it
(Yeah, but actually you can just use obtainium, this is probably the future)
