  • Hey fellow european!

Tinytronics.nl -> Pi4 model B 8GB: 87€ and in stock. The 4GB model is 68€. They also have orange Pi for a higher budget.

Kiwi-electronics.com -> Pi 4 model B, 4GB? 63€. They also have all the pi accessories you could want.

If you are going to use paperless for important documents, and if you want to not lose data for sure, get a 1TB cheap HDD or something and a USB3.0 adapter. SD cards will eventually fail.

Otherwise, get an old used laptop 2nd hand. I used an old HP probook G1 laptop for about a year for my server. It didn’t use much power at all.

  • Yeah it literally can’t do its one main job well, I now ran into the Spotify bug that has been reported since 2017 and resurfaced again the past month for a lot of people:

After playing one song, skipping or letting the next song play, the sound is muted without any indication at all and you have to scrub the time then restart the song to get it back.

That is literally your 1 main job Spotify! That is literally what you do: play music. It can’t even do that anymore. Not to mention that since forever, the bug still exists that storing Spotify music on an SD card results in needing to redownload and re-move your entire downloaded library when your phone restarts. It is like when the google pixel 3a had a bug where the cell calling simply didn’t work or was perpetually muted Like, that is the basic functionality.

Oh and then there is also the bug that with a bad internet connection, you literally can’t load into the app and see/play your downloaded library without putting your phone in airplane mode and force stopping and restarting the app.

Spotify has become so trash trying to do everything and squeeze profit every place possible and made their app barely usable in the meantime.

    Sorry, rant over.

  • Avid jellyfin user here:

Subtitles on jellyfin suck. Like really suck. Unless they are burned in with the media (maybe not the right term, but when they are shipped with the media as a track which some private trackers require) , they progressively get more and more out of sync to a plateau and get messed up with tracking. Almost every release this year has a “fix” for. Multiple clients with the same behavior. Not to mention getting hardware accelerated transcoding working on an ARC GPU 😅

But overall Jellyfin is damn great. It just is not quite to the refinement of Netflix, which is fine! It isn’t commercially backed luckily, so it won’t go to shit for money like Netflix did either.

  • For my thief threat model, I just have the computer in an unassuming black Node304 in a utility room on a shelf lol. Security through obscurity is often as good for a smash and grab threat. They go for visually high value items.

Entire boot partition with main drive keys on a removable hard drive with security keys for the data drives in an encrypted password manager. No way a theif is getting that data, even if I accidentally leave the boot drive in there out of laziness. That means that I am comfortable storing personal documents there also.

It is indeed more of a hassle to reboot. USB plugged in -> decrypt and setup zpools script -> docker service restart. Specifically upgrading the kernel also because with the boot partition removed, all of the hooks don’t get processed. However, this also protests against the copyright gangster smash and grabs as a bonus. Probably an extreme edge case as that doesn’t happen anymore here in Belgium, but it was interesting to set up.

  • Why would I want to hide the smart bar if it’s actually useful, quick and modern, unline AnySoftKeyboard…

Because it is literally not one of those things. It is almost a direct 1:1 copy of AnySoft’s utility menu except takes up an entire new row constsntly without ever hiding and is missing a few things tbat Anysoft has like split keyboard. Literally the only difference between the two besides missing features is pop-up vs persistant taking up 1-2 extra rows.

how about a modern and useful top bar that does many more things than the static AnySoftKeyboard’s?

Again, what feature that is more “modern and useful”? It is completely static except that it can be manually hidden until the next character is pressed. Why even have a hide button then?

How about good-looking password manager integration (and not AnySoftKeyboard’s aberration)?

Have you ever actually used AnySoftKeyboard? They are literally the exact same down to the shapeHere is proof. The only difference is that AnySoftKeyboard respects light keyboard choice where Florisboard simply doesn’t respect day/night switches for “follow theme” or “system time” and Florisboard does not work in Firefox where AnySoft does as we also see in my screenshots.

How about being able to separate layouts and languages?

That is pretty cool actually! It’s really a shame that there is only one keyboard layout and it is per-language standard layout of what florisboard devs “think is right”. Why can’t i have a choice of better or worse bottom rows and only get to have the worst in florisboard? Also, Anysoft has different layouts per language, just not “mix and match”

    Clipboard support?

    Anysoftkeyboard has that. https://github.com/AnySoftKeyboard/AnySoftKeyboard/issues/3450

Again, very interesting board and in the future it can be great! Just not yet for me personally yet. I don’t have a horse in the race, maybe the code is indeed much cleaner, better, and easier to maintain. Then it is definitely a much better future option!

It is just missing a bunch of features and advertising on a platform on the basis of "better, more modern and more features is disingenuous at best. I have a problem with people spreading disinformation and BS marketing buzzwords with no.justification as their advertisement. That’s it.

  • I just tried it for a few days. Using it right now. I think in 2-3 years it sill be a pretty functional keyboard for more than monolingual people.

It’s super uncustomizable now and not very functional (for me) right now.

    • There are open bugs because there literally no autocorrect (well one bug was closed but people aho use the beta release say that it still doesn’t work. This makes it take 2-3 fimes longer to type anything without tons of mistakes.

    • Haptic feedback only works if you force ignore system settings even when system vibration is on

    • no option to split up punctuation between comma and period so you have to search throufh a giant menu much more slowly

    • no keyboard layout options

    • “smartbar” auto hide (when enabled) simply never ever hides

    • spacebar swiping quickly doesn’t act reasonably. It pushes you 6-7 characters into the new paragraph

Your critique about AnySoftKeyboard is weird because people don’t realize how wrong it is because it doesn’t happen to them. You just have to hold and release for the symbol. You can slide left or right and definitely do not have to have your finger on the symbol to select it. It is likely there is a bug on your system.

I’m interested in knowing what is “more modern, well functioning, and organized” about it if AnySoftKeyboard has more features, better language support, modern autocorrect and word fill, can have the exact same layout and 10 other layoits, and is more customizable.

Still haven’t found a person who can list a feature that florisboadd has that AnySoftKeyboard doesn’t, even thouvh multiple people have said “it has more features”

  • Well this article is pretty disingenuous…

    1. The distribution “managed by a single person” depends on hundreds of people working on different sofware to keep up. It’s not “one person doing better than the thousands of Microsoft employees combined” implication they are pushing

    2. Windows 11 beat the linux distros by up to 20% in 1% lows which are argued as much more important by most tech reviewers. It wasn’t consistant at all which means that there was a giant margin of error.

I love linux and linux gaming has gotten radically better, but I am tired of tech “journalism” literally just cherrypicking, misleading, clickbait trash.

  • Personal possession of up to 5 grams and/or 5 cannabis plants is decriminalized for the general public, but it is still illegal. Sale by licensed shops is legal.

Belgium is similar, up to 3g decriminalized, but no sale is allowed, unlike the Netherlands, so Belgians legally have to go to the Netherlands to get weed. Great for the local Belgian economy 😂
