  • Get the boots that reduce rocket jump damage and then rocket jump everywhere to get a feel for it. Then take the boots off and rocket jump everywhere until you learn to do it without killing yourself.

All rockets require various degrees of shooting where the enemy will be, rather than where they are, but it also helps to shoot where they might be - drop a rocket just past a corner or through a doorway just in case someone’s approaching from the other side. Worst case scenario you can be confident nobody’s right on the other side.

You can surprise people around corners with rockets, but if they can see you firing they’re probably gonna dodge it past medium range. Get closer so they cant.

Just like you can rocket jump off the blasts, you can knock people around with them. Throw them at the walls behind snipers to knock them off their perches. Knock the scout into the chasm. Separate the medic and heavy.

  • NGL if you take out what’s left of the resources in 5e you’ll reduce the game to exclusively standing in front of the enemy taking turns hitting each other, instead of just mostly.

The truth is if you want a resourceless game you’re gonna have to play a different system, and if you’re gonna play a different system you’re gonna have to run it. Luckily, it’s very easy to get groups for new systems, because you just tell the 5e players it’s D&D and they probably won’t even notice the rules changed.

  • If you’re gonna do RP shopping, you gotta establish before the session that’s gonna be what’s happening so everyone can come up with ways to interact with the scenario.

You also absolutely have to (looking at you in particular, 5e) establish availabilities and exact prices beforehand. The back and forth of “how much does X cost -> I can’t afford that” is the biggest waste of time when shopping.

  • Recently played Pathfinder: Wath of the Righteous and Pyschonauts 2. Really enjoyed both of them, the first because I cut my teeth on D&D 3.x and have loved the base system ever since, and the second because it’s a really good follow up to the original. Interesting new powers and worlds, lots of really entertaining characters again, and a surprise appearance from Jack Black. Surprise to me, at least.

Currently I’m working through Wolfenstein: Youngblood, Tactics Ogre: Reborn, and Vermintide 2 with my best mate. Youngblood is scratching the nazi killing itch, but I think New Order was still the best in the series - the RPG elements just aren’t needed. Vermintide 2 is turning into a lot of fun now I’m understanding the characters abilities better, but I imagine we’re going to lose interest before actually reaching really high power levels.
Tactics Ogre: Reborn has had me sucked in for months now. I know a lot has been changed/improved/added to over the decades, but I can see why it was so influencial on the tactics genre. I nearly have all the postgames spells unlocked, so soon I’ll be going back to the start and taking alternate routes through the story. Possibly with some ogre blade body snatching along the way.
