I just don’t understand how anyone could base a company on an exploit. That is what it is in the end - the found an exploit and took advantage of it. Seems like the logical thing would be for apple to immediately close the exploit.
The answer is right there. If Apple wanted iMessage on Android it would be there. It isn’t so they don’t want it.
Linus lost all credibility to me, I used to barely trust him, now just not at all
Yeah same. I have several machines that whirrr all the time. The power cost and usage is fairly negligible. The real costs in the house are appliances. OP will save more energy by getting a more power efficient fridge or dishwasher than worry about a computer being on in the closet
That’s what I don’t understand about the pushback. Yes we all want privacy, but Lemmy here and the fediverse is not built around the idea of privacy. It’s literally a protocol that shoots out whatever you type to anyone who wants to listen. You can type on any server and it’s going to end up on any other server. Can’t be mad because someone like Meta is seeing that and going “Hm, we have servers, we could listen to that data.”
again it’s not going to servers and scraping data, it would be sitting somewhere receiving public data that is pushed out. There’s no malicious getting around privacy settings, if it’s pushed out then it’s free game. I agree about post privacy, but again activitypub already takes care of that
Yeah I’m in a wait and see with my instance. People act like it’s one and done. When they start they’ll be just another server to me. If they start becoming hostile and everything coming from them it’s terrible then I’ll defederate. Same as any other server.
People are worried about data being misused but, I’m sorry, that’s what happens when we publish to an open protocol. Anyone can use it however they want, and yeah, they’re are scum usage for it
Woof. That doesn’t just happen overnight. That’s months of missed payments that resorted in pay it all now or we’re taking it. Good on you for saying no, you’d never see that money again
That’s a good idea. Listen to public data being broadcasted out, then you aren’t worrying people with scraping or anything. It would only be from go live onward, but you would just be listening to the protocol.
But ActivityPub already publishes all of the data out. I don’t think this is going out to servers asking for data, it’s listening to public data being broadcasted out. If people are broadcasting over activitypub then they’re okay with it being shared.
If they don’t want it shared then they don’t have to publish ActivityPub to anyone. They can defederate from the search federation. Those tools already exist.
I disagree. Post privacy sure, but the internet is by definition public. Anything you put out there can be used for pretty much everything, the original rules of the internet apply. I’d be happy to see an easy opt out on the engine to remove yourself, but if everything is opt in it’ll never get off the ground.
You should really read the article…
If I had a dollar for every time I told my company how I could refactor code to reduce costs…
Sure it can be, what I’m trying to say is that there is no financial incentive for it to be though. Programming takes time and money, and there is literally no profit to be had for doing it.
Not phone companies, but phone APIs.

If you do it well, $0.0140/min.
because they aren’t people 99% of the time, it’s a computer program. It’ll keep attempting, and if you do engage it will switch over to a real person once they have someone hooked.
They even have ones that garner attention, like shuffling noises, saying “Oh I’m sorry, hang on a second” and other gimics to keep you on the line and start engaging. You’d be surprised at how many people will say “Oh sure” out of politeness.
As for cost, to run a virtual machine in the cloud running 24/7 trying all the numbers one by one in the database would cost… pennies. We’re talking probably less than 5 bucks a month.
They should have known this would happen, I mean, after X-Men origins wolverine…
If it’s your culture? Absolutely go for it. Not about to tell someone from another culture what they should or shouldn’t name their kid, and it they get bullied then it’s something you can take up with the school.
If it’s not your culture, then it’s a weird mix of “we’re just so random” parenting that is going to set them up for a lifetime of ridicule, which in the end is selfish because you’re not really thinking about how that will affect them. Imagine introducing yourself as Mohammed to your new Arabic boss, when you have zero ties to that culture or the importance to that name.
I read the about and still don’t understand what it is or how it tries to accomplish what it’s doing. I run a couple communities, I’d be interested in making a structure, but I have no idea what this tool is
Ah, the marketing department had to justify their existence, didn’t they?
I think a combination. Newer cars will require newer phones, older cars probably won’t support newer phones. If I had an older car I may keep an old phone and hotspot it or something.
