That was a town?
Good tho know, thanks. I wonder how that will work in couch-coop.
It’s the reason why I’ve been holding off on getting a PS5, and recently decided I just won’t. The only thing that has come out recently that tempts me is BG3, but I’m past buying a console for a single game; I’ll just play it on PC.
Father, I’ve been bad.
Mommy, I’ve been bad.
Do you mind me asking why youfre selling?
The Model 100 is a KB I’d love to own one day simply because they’re so pretty. But I also think they did a nice job with the key layout; the only thing stopping me is that I’d like a more aggressive stagger - I already have an Ergodox, and it’s too tame.
But, damn, that’s a fine looking piece of kit. Keep me in mind when you offload it, and I may be able to throw my hat in.
Depends on how much you let them link it back to you, but you’re absolutely right: social media is a privacy nightmare. It can be mitigated; pick a Lemmy instance that doesn’t require an email, and don’t give out any identifying information, or just lurk. Many of us have multiple accounts on different servers, with carefully segregated personas. You do what you can; OP asked why (or why not) scrob. I see no reason to give out that information, only to give a company more information they can sell.
Social engineering. The more information they have about you, the easier you are to immitate.
The threat isn’t in any one piece of information about you; it’s in the corpus of knowledge, the profile they can build. Your tastes in music - at the granularity of not only what you listen to, but how much, and at what times - can help narrow down:
These are just the things I can tyink of off the top of my head, and I’m not in infosec.
Japan is not in “the West.” It also has a relatively small population; it’s only a third of the size of tye US, and less than a tenth of either China or India. Germany’s population is flat, but it’s even smaller than Japan. France’s population is growing. Spain’s is declining slightly, but its even smaller than Germany - half the population size! Overall, the total rate of population change in the combined EU is a fraction of the number of new people the US added, and a drop in the bucket compared to the total growth of the overall World population.
Were you suggesting that anti-aging technology should only be available to people in the wealthier countries? Because those are almost the only ones with flat or negative growth. If everyone has access equally, then there will be a population explosion and crisis, because the countries adding the most people to the world right now are also the largest - by orders of magnitude.
a. not all blockchain is bad b. I have neither seen, nor heard, of blockchain or cryptocoins on the platform. If blockchain is being used under the covers, it’s not visible to users. I see no ability to do anything with NFTs or cryptocoins in any of the clients.
Session delivers messages more reliably than many platforms; E2E encrypts all messages (unencrypted is not even an option); requires no PII; has a good battery profile on mobile; reliably allows sharing, and has nice QOL features (that my non-tech family members have come to expect) like animated GIF search-and-embed; it supports message deletion and dissapearing messages; it has encrypted voice and video chat.
If there’s any blockchain in the stack, then Session is an excellent example of its usefulness.
It’s all open-source, too, so audit away.
It’s not perfect, of course. There’s no CLI client. Because there’s no PII, there’s no registry, so connecting to people is harder than many platforms, and looking people up, impossible. The desktop client is an Electron app, so it’s typically resource hungry. It doesn’t yet have sent message editing.
I’m not Catholic; I’m an athiest. But I think this pope is a smart, decent person at the top of one of the world’s largest, wealthiest, old, and conservative organizations, with simply legendary levels of internal politics. He’s one of the most liberal popes we’ve ever seen, ever - although, we’re talking about the Catholic church, so “most liberal” only goes so far. But I do think he’s behaved like a kind, inclusive person.
I suspect any lack of real cleansing of corruption and pedophilia has been due to politics and realpolitik in the church, and not because he approves of it.
Even if he could mount an internal inquisition today, he doesn’t seem like a Pope who would.
Session satisfies all your points. It started life as a fork of Signal, but is not tied to any PII. Synced across devices, everything. iOS, too, even. The only thing it doesn’t have is a terminal client, but it’s easly days.
I’ve tried them all; so far Session is the only one that passes the non-tech-spouse test. We were happy sith Wire for a couple of years, but it’s been going through some severe enshittification in the post several months.
Edit fixed the fdroid repo URL
There are a lot of ways it could go wrong, for sure. IANAL, but lots of small and large companies have and do navigate these issues. But I wasn’t talking about legally contentious content; this would be a work-aruund for stuff that’s expensive to cache, or stuff you just don’t agree with and so don’t want to absorb the cost out of the goodness of yous heart. Just continue to defederate if you have any doubt.
Anyway, it was just a potential work-around to address OP’s issue. I’m not a Lemmy dev and won’t be implementing it.
Developed countries often have flat or negative population growth. Even so[ the population of the US is still growing; we gained 1.2 million people between 2020-2021. However, it doesn’t matter, because most of the peopl in the world don’t live in “the West”. There are 300M people in the US; India, alone, has a population of 1.4 billion. India’s population grew by 11.2 million in 2020-2021.
The total world population grew by 68 million in 2020. Where in the world did you hear that we’re having an underpopulation crisis in the West?
Yes, we have Trump. But someday, we won’t. We won’t have Putin, or Kim Jong Un. Old age, and death by it, doesn’t guarantee that a country’s leadership will get better, but for some populations it’s their only chance.
Dunno. I haven’t studied it; all my info comes from informal conversations with a jewish friend of mine, a long time ago. I could also be misremembering what he said.
It’s something I would look into, if faced with confirmation of a judao-christian afterlife, especially if I could concurrently cover multiple bases. I’d look at Islam, as well; could be they’re not mutually exclusive. I dread to think of how limited my diet would become… but faced with an ensured eternity in hell ¯\(ツ)/¯
Overpopulation. An eternity of Trump running for president again. Countries saddled with dictators who never die.
We’d have to solve a whole lot of other issue, of the kind we’re proving incapable of addressing right now, without the benefit of having the old guard die off and giving a new generation a chance. Plus, all the fucking extra amount of people putting more load on an already strained ecosystem.
We’d have to implement Carousel, but good luck with that: it’s already almost impossible to evet get a senile senior’s licence revoked in the US.
What op said still stands: if only one of your users follow a high-traffic, heavy-content /c/, then the server is caching all of that content for one person.
E.g., there’s this great bot on Mastodon that posts random fractals, and the highest-voted ones “breed” to create a new generation of child fractals. The bot posts a static image and an animated movie of each new child every 4 hours. The images are ca 5mb each; the movies are between 20 & 40mb ea. That is, on average, 210mb/d, or 1.4gb per week. That’s a lot of data. You might, as an admin offering a free service, not want to have to pay for that much storage just because one or two users are suscribed to /c/flamereactor (“FlameReactor” is the name, so you can find this mind-blowingly awesome bot). There’s also bandwidth considerations, both on the pull and when users request the content.
I like the idea, though, and will suggest a tweak, tried and true from Usenet days: provide the ability to unblock to only paying users. It’d give admins control, plus money to offset storage costs. Maybe provide three options to admins: full defederation; auto-block with any user able to unblock, for odeous but low impact sices; and auto-block with unblock for only users in some group - close friends, paying users, whatever.
Lemmy could also transcribe content into links back to the source, but that’s just punting the bandwidth costs onto someone else, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is frowned upon within The Federation (although it’s common practice with Reddit and X(twitter) content).
TIL Satan is a genie.
Also, in these games, the folks going for “more wishes” are shooting low. The only wish you need, which also defeats the monkey’s paw, is “grant me omnipotence.”
But: this is Satan we’re talking about. The Deciever, The Traitor. Not only is this a monkey-paw situation, but a Christian Satan is going to actively try to decieve you.
I don’t think I’d even trust his answer about whether there’s a cost, so I’d pass on the winning lotto numbers, too.
I’d say, “no thanks” and immediately convert to Catholicism, start going to church, and lead a clean life from here on out. If the orthodox Jews are right, I’m fucked anyway since my mother isn’t a Jew, so Christianity is the best bet.
Curing aging will make it worse.
They’re myths, right? They can be entertaining, and they once served a function. They can even serve a function today; most of the evils perpetrated by religion were attributable to organized religion.
We no longer depend on meat, hunting, gathering, or religion, for our society. They’re vestiges. I think “bullshit” is a bit excessive.
I’m so close to blocking their mail servers; so much spam comes through their servers, and they don’t honor unsubscriptions.
